This pamphlet begins with a look at the attitudes toward alcohol in this country and the effect of advertising alcohol. It describes what ethanol is, where it comes from, and explains Blood Alcohol Content. Particular attention is paid to the effects of alcohol on the brain as well as mental and physical function. Including information on liver disease and increased damage to the heart as a result of drinking. The brochure concludes with how alcohol is a direct link to many different types of cancers. Urging the reader to stay away from booze.
A SAMHSA survey shows that 60% of young people who binge drink and 47% of young people who smoke also use illicit drugs as compared with 5% for non-smokers or drinkers.
In attempting to prevent young people from ruining their lives through the use of damaging and dangerous drugs such as meth, cocaine or heroin, it’s important remember the origins of substance abuse. Alcohol, while by no means harmless, is a common pathway to the abuse of harder substances. Prevent young people from using this “gateway” drug and increase the odds they’ll live happier, healthier, drug free lives.
