About this resource

This pamphlet inform readers about the causes, transmission, symptoms and prevention of genital warts. This STD currently infect 20 million people in the United States, most of them between the ages of 20 and 24. Genital warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is a sexually transmitted infection. Genital warts are growths on the surface of the skin or mucous membrane which occur in the genital area. The warts are soft, fleshy bumps that vary in size and shape.

Readers are warned that the virus can be spread by skin to skin contact short of intercourse. The risk of infection does not go away with the disappearance or removal of the warts. Only medical testing following treatment can determine when it is safe to resume sex. Genital warts can come back, even after treatment.  Abstinence and restricting sex to one uninfected partner are the recommended prevention strategies. The brochure recommends condoms, but with the caveat that it is not a fully effective preventive measure. Readers wishing to know more information about the subject are referred to the “In the Know Zone” website and to the National STD hotline.

This brochure is also available in Spanish.
