Herpes is an incurable sexually transmitted infection, but one that can be avoided and treated. The card describes the two types of herpes simplex virus as well as the symptoms of infection. The viruses are called herpes simplex type 1 and herpes simplex type 2.

The card also warns readers that all forms of sex carry the risk of herpes transmission, even if the blisters symptomatic of the disease are not visible. 45% of infected people do not know that they have the disease. Prevention strategies recommended include abstention, restricting sex to a single, uninfected partner. Another strategy is condom use, though it warns that condoms provide only a limited degree of protection.
